There are few television franchises quite as synonymous with sweeping romance, historical drama and gloriously windswept landscapes as Outlander. Now, the saga turns back the clock once again with Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a romantic prequel that explores the love stories of two couples whose lives will ultimately shape the people we have come to know and love.

Rather than attempting to recreate the lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry of Jamie and Claire, Season One wisely looks elsewhere; to the parents who came before them.

The result is a lush, passionate and occasionally melodramatic ten-episode journey that proves there are still plenty of stories worth telling in the Outlander universe.

Love Before Jamie and Claire

At the heart of Blood of My Blood are two romances separated by more than a century.

In the rugged Scottish Highlands of the 18th century, Harriet Slater’s Ellen MacKenzie finds herself caught between family expectations, clan politics and a powerful attraction to Jamie Roy’s Brian Fraser. Their meeting may be fateful, but this is no simple fairytale romance. Ellen is a woman attempting to carve out her own destiny in a world determined to dictate it for her.

Meanwhile, Hermione Corfield’s Julia Moriston and Jeremy Irvine’s Henry Beauchamp find themselves navigating their own turbulent love story against the backdrop of World War I.

It is an ambitious structure, and one that could easily have become unwieldy. Instead, the parallel narratives provide Blood of My Blood with an interesting thematic throughline: love as an act of rebellion.

Whether you’re in the Scottish Highlands or surrounded by the devastation of wartime Britain, these characters are constantly being told where they belong, who they should love and what sacrifices they should make.

Naturally, they have other ideas.

Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy Bring the Fire

The biggest success of the season is the central relationship between Ellen and Brian.

Slater brings a wonderful combination of vulnerability and steel to Ellen, giving the character a sense of independence that prevents her from becoming simply another tragic romantic heroine. There is a genuine fire behind her performance, particularly when Ellen finds herself forced to navigate the brutal expectations of Highland society.

Roy, meanwhile, makes Brian an immediately likeable presence. He brings a rugged charm to the role without simply attempting to channel Sam Heughan’s iconic Jamie Fraser. And that’s important.

Blood of My Blood works best when it remembers that Brian and Ellen are not merely younger versions of Jamie and Claire. They are their own people, with their own fears, flaws and ambitions.

The chemistry between Roy and Slater carries much of the Highland storyline, and when the series lets their romance breathe, it can be genuinely swoon-worthy.

A Romance Written in the Shadow of War

The Julia and Henry storyline offers a fascinating contrast.

Where Brian and Ellen’s romance is wrapped in the mythology of the Highlands, Julia and Henry’s relationship feels more intimate and melancholy. Their connection unfolds against the uncertainty and devastation of World War I, with separation and communication becoming central to their story.

Corfield gives Julia a quiet resilience, while Irvine brings an understated emotional weight to Henry.
Their story may initially feel like the secondary narrative, particularly when compared with the sweeping grandeur of the Highland setting, but it gradually becomes one of the season’s emotional anchors.

There is something particularly poignant about watching two people attempt to build a future while history is busy tearing the world apart around them.

The Highlands Have Never Looked Better

Visually, Blood of My Blood is everything you’d expect from an Outlander production.

The Scottish landscapes are magnificent, the period costumes are sumptuous and the production design gives the series an appropriately epic sense of scale. Castles, clan gatherings, forests and windswept landscapes provide the kind of romantic backdrop that television rarely gets to indulge in anymore.

But beneath all that grandeur lies a darker world.

Clan politics, patriarchal expectations, violence and social hierarchy constantly threaten to overwhelm the characters. The series understands that the romantic fantasy of historical Scotland only works when contrasted against the harsh reality of the period.

And that tension gives the show some of its bite.

A Prequel That Earns Its Place

The biggest danger with any prequel is inevitability. We already know where these characters’ stories eventually lead, so why should we care?

Thankfully, Blood of My Blood largely avoids feeling like homework for Outlander fans. Yes, there are connections, familiar names and pieces of history that will mean more to devotees of the original series. But Season One is ultimately interested in telling its own love stories rather than simply filling in gaps in the mythology.

It is romantic, occasionally steamy, frequently melodramatic and unapologetically earnest. And that’s precisely why it works.

Final Verdict: The Bloodline Runs Deep

Outlander: Blood of My Blood may not completely escape the shadow of its predecessor, but Season One proves that the Fraser family tree still has plenty of fascinating branches left to explore.

With Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy providing the season’s beating heart, and Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine delivering a compelling counterpoint, this is a prequel that understands the enduring power of the Outlander formula: love against impossible odds, history pressing down on ordinary people, and two hearts stubbornly refusing to surrender.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is streaming now on NEON.

Sam and Graham are back and ready for another fun-loving, adventure-filled road trip as they swap the Scottish Highlands for a tour of New Zealand in Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham – New Zealand. And this is one of the most joyous television shows you’ll see all-year.

Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish hit the road again for another travel adventure and this time they’re going to New Zealand. Exploring Scottish connections to NZ, while diving into Aotearoa’s own history, people and culture.

Best buds and Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish have won over a legion of fans with their work on the beloved historical romance series, and their back-and-forth banter made for plenty of fun as they explored the length and breadth of Scotland in Men in Kilts. Now they’re back and ready for more as Sam decides it’s time to drop in on his long-time friend Graham, who enjoys a quiet and relaxed life in New Zealand. Things soon get shaken up as the two besties and sometimes frenemies explore New Zealand top to bottom in a warm and enjoyable road trip that will warm your soul.

Much like a finely aged Scotch, this dynamic duo’s chemistry has only improved with time. Their infectious enthusiasm and banter remain the heart and soul of the show, and at times, they feel like a old-married couple with their back and forth. Sam is the far more adventurous of the two, and his desire for adrenaline leads to plenty of hilarity as he puts Graham through the ringer. Graham, on the other hand, is a far more ‘refined man of leisure’ type and basks in the hospitality, food and drink of New Zealand’s shores, and his local knowledge and appreciation of the culture leads to plenty of fun moments on screen.

The breathtaking cinematography is, once again, a standout feature of the series. New Zealand’s diverse landscapes, from lush forests to rugged mountains, are showcased in all their glory. The drone shots alone are worth the price of admission, offering sweeping vistas that will leave you yearning for your own adventure in this picturesque land.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham – New Zealand is the way it immerses you in New Zealand’s rich culture and history. Sam and Graham aren’t content with just visiting the tourist hotspots; they dive headfirst into the heart and soul of the country. Whether they’re learning about Maori traditions, exploring the legacy of New Zealand’s Scottish settlers, or trying their hand at traditional activities, their deep respect for the culture shines through. There’s also a lot of emotional resonance in this series as Sam and Graham offer up anecdotes and stories of their only family lives, and this shared connection between the two of them makes the series deeply sentimental at times.

Sitting centre stage in the series is the connection of the New Zealand film industry to Sam and Graham, with Graham recounting his connection to Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and how the three-year experience changed his life completely. A return to Weta Workshop and reunion with Sir Richard Taylor makes for a uniquely fun moment, and with the help of some special effects wizardry, we see Sam and Graham stepping into the world of Middle Earth once more. It’s a heartfelt tribute to the creative talent that New Zealand has to offer, and it makes for a very special watch.

In a world filled with travel shows that often feel formulaic, Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham – New Zealand stands out as a heartfelt, genuine, and thoroughly enjoyable series. It’s a testament to the power of friendship, curiosity, and cultural exploration. Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish have once again delivered a delightful travelogue that’s bound to leave you with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of New Zealand.
