Set in the time before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, leading up to the Company of the Ring entering the Mines of Moria, The Hunt for Gollum finds the Wizard Gandalf sending the ranger Strider to hunt for the creature Gollum, with the film framed from Gollum’s perspective.

While production is being kept under wrap and key, Serkis has mentioned that he is looking forward to explore a deeper into the twisted psychology of Gollum and Sméagol, and has framed Todd Phillips’ Joker as a reference point for production.

Production has onyl just kicked off so we’ll be waiting a bit before we get a solid look into the film, but the promise and excitement of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is fully present and this will be a blockbuster event when it arrives in cinemas on December 17, 2027.

The world beckons, and adventure lies ahead as Sir Peter Jackson invites audiences back to the mythic lands of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth for a new and sensational tale of high fantasy adventure in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and this promises to be a tale of hope, power, glory, sacrifice, the horse lords of Rohan and the legend of Helms Deep.

Set 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan, and his family as they defend their kingdom against an army of Dunlendings.

The world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings continues to enchant audiences around the globe. His vivid imagination and sensational storytelling is beloved by audiences of every age, gender and country, and now Sir Peter Jackson invites audiences back to the lands of Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. And a brand new vision is promised in his epic anime blockbuster. Jackson, along with frequent collaborator Philippa Boyens, were looking for a new angle to realise another chapter of Tolkien’s great works and settled on the formidable history of the mighty horse lords of Rohan to do so. Such a story demanded an incredible new vision and a new point of view to be brought to the complete narrative, and they found their storyteller in celebrated anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, and the resulting picture is something that will completely take audiences by surprise.

As an anime filmmaker, Kenji Kamiyama is one of the most talented anime directors of his generation, contributing to classic works such as Genocyber, Ultraman and Ghost in the Shell, along with stretching his talents with more Western-driven productions such as Star Wars: Visions and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Tapped by Sir Peter Jackson to lead the production of The War of the Rohirrim, Kamiyama makes the film his own while also honouring the grand tradition of Tolkien. Utilising a complete hand-drawn style of animation, with every single shot of this picture being hand-drawn in perfect detail, Kamiyama blends both Western animation and Eastern anime for a film that completely fits Tolkien’s grand story but is entirely unique and different in its delivery.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is the world of Tolkien delivered from an anime perspective, but it holds true to the tapestry of Tolkien’s vision. Director Kenji Kamiyama delivers a film that sticks to the European influences of the Rohirran, especially the influence of the Anglo-Saxon culture that was a key development point for Tolkien, but he does renders this from an anime point-of-view. While it’s obvious that The War of the Rohirrim is a straight-up anime movie, the subtler design work and narrative story points mark this picture as something totally unique within Tolkien’s broad cannon. While not leaning into specifics, certain moments have been designed from the anime point of view, and these narrative elements keep the audience on guard and engaged in what is delivered to the big screen.

From its first frames, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a completely transformative experience, and audiences will find themselves lost in the picturesque visuals that make their way up to the big screen. This piece of cinema is a pure piece of art, and Kamiyama and his talented team deliver vibrant and energetic cinematic experiences. The colours are crisp and layered, and the animation flows flawlessly as the film’s heroine, Héra, rides forth to take on the marauding forces of the Dunlendings. The fight scenes are energetic and in your force, and you can hear the clash and clang of steel on iron, and the blood flows as the battle for the fate of Rohan roars. Keeping with its anime roots, The War of the Rohirrim is filled with a good dose of blood and guts, and there’s another subtle, sexy nod to the character design, which is not overt and is in keeping with the style of the medium. It’s also a refreshing watch to see the actions of men fighting men and not a battle for ultimate power, and this power struggle brought upon by the actions of mankind is a refreshing approach to a story set in this world.

Bringing a powerful presence to the film is Brian Cox, whose Shakespearian training and grand gravitas enable him to command the screen as the legendary King Helm Hammerhand. Cox has built a career portraying strong and formidable characters, and he delivers this role with a booming voice and commanding stance. As a key figure in Tolkien’s legendarium, Helm Hammerhand is depicted as a force of nature – a giant of a man, as uncompromising as the rock of the Hornburg that bears his name.

While he is a strong and resourceful leader, he is not without flaws, and his unwavering personality adds an edge to the drama, allowing director Kamiyama to explore the theme of leadership and its potential for blindness. Cox fully embodies Helm, and throughout the film, there are pivotal moments that showcase his expressive performance. Helm Hammerhand represents a powerhouse performance by Cox, and with his thunderous voice, he makes the cinema resonate when he calls the Riddermark to action.

In The War of the Rohirrim, rising star Gaia Wise brings a sense of adventure and a grand dose of heroism to the role of Héra, the spirited and tomboyish daughter of Helm Hammerhand. While she is a princess of Rohan, Héra is much more interested in galloping across the vast plains than in wearing pretty dresses. Initially, she is viewed as a pawn for political manoeuvres, but destiny soon thrusts her into a pivotal role. Through her strategic thinking, skill, and the fierce spirit of the shieldmaidens, she embodies a burning hope and emerges as the leader and heroine her people desperately need.

Wise delivers an energetic performance, showcasing her character in a way that resonates with the film’s talented designers, who infuse Héra with thrilling action on screen. Throughout the film, Héra experiences significant growth and transformation, evolving into one of the most exciting and dynamic characters in The Lord of the Rings franchise. Just as Miranda Otto’s Éowyn inspired young girls years ago, Gaia Wise’s Héra is poised to make a profound impact on the franchise as well.

Bringing the shadow of villainy to The War of the Rohirrim is Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, the brutish leader of the Dunlendings. Pasqualino delivers a performance filled with frenzied antagonism and a hint of madness. Motivated by a desire for revenge against the people of Rohan, he lays siege to the Hornburg, and his growing thirst for vengeance casts a dark shadow over the narrative.

Director Kenji Kamiyama and the film itself offer a nuanced perspective on Wulf’s actions, providing some justification for his motives within the story’s world. This complexity heightens the intensity of the narrative. Pasqualino’s portrayal of Wulf makes him a formidable adversary, showcasing the darker aspects of humanity. This brings a fresh experience to The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, differing from the more traditional arcs typically seen in Tolkien’s works.

This grand tale of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a fresh approach to J.R.R. Tolkien’s treasured legendarium of tales, and with its ferocity of narrative and performance, the beauty of its art and design and the innovation of its story and perspective, makes it one of this year’s most exciting and original presentations up on the silver screen. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a purely epic spectacle, and it will deliver a hell of a roar for cinemagoers and honours the warrior spirit of the horse lords of Rohan.

In a theatre world where reimaginings are commonplace, The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Adventure carves its niche, bringing Tolkien’s beloved epic to life through music and theatrical ingenuity. Currently staged at Auckland’s Civic Theatre, the production merges grand storytelling with an intimate approach that invites audiences on a journey through Middle-earth.

The show’s atmospheric setting at The Civic perfectly complements the immersive experience. The iconic venue, with its intricate, almost gothic architecture, sets the stage for an adventure that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new. This adaptation leans away from the sweeping spectacle of Peter Jackson’s films, opting instead for a performance that focuses on the story’s heart: the Hobbits’ journey of camaraderie and courage.

The cast delivers standout performances, each bringing a distinct vibrancy to their roles. Tom Amandes shines as Gandalf, embodying the character’s wisdom and strength with both gravitas and warmth. His scenes of counsel and guidance are particularly moving, enhanced by his deep, resonant voice that fills the theatre. Spencer Davis Milford brings a tender vulnerability to Frodo, portraying the young Hobbit’s growing burden with a quiet intensity that captivates. Michael Kurowski’s Samwise provides a heartfelt performance, his unwavering loyalty shining through in emotionally charged scenes that highlight the bond between Sam and Frodo.

The show-stealing performance comes from Tony Bozzuto as Gollum. Bozzuto’s transformation into the tormented creature is a masterclass in physicality and vocal range. His portrayal captures Gollum’s schizophrenic nature, deftly shifting between pitiful and menacing with an intensity that keeps audiences on edge. The song “My Precious” is a standout moment, balancing tragic humour with genuine pathos.

The musical score, composed by A.R. Rahman, Christopher Nightingale, and the Finnish group Värttinä, is a blend of folk-inspired tunes and orchestral compositions that perfectly encapsulate Middle-earth’s essence. The Hobbits’ songs, in particular, provide some of the show’s most delightful moments—folk performances that bring a sense of levity and warmth, especially during their early Shire scenes. These numbers not only highlight the actors’ musical talents but also anchor the audience in the rustic, joyous spirit of Hobbiton.

The ensemble’s use of actor-musicianship brings the narrative to life, with rich harmonies and evocative instrumentals that add depth to the story. The songs serve as narrative bridges, drawing out the emotional undercurrents of Tolkien’s world while also standing strong as musical pieces in their own right.

For those who appreciate the magic of live theatre and the timeless storytelling of Tolkien, this production is a must-see. The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Adventure doesn’t rely on flashy special effects but instead captures the spirit of Middle-earth through its cast, music, and imaginative staging. Whether you are a die-hard fan or simply someone looking for a unique theatre experience, this show offers a journey worth taking.

Season Two of Prime Video’s epic high fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has arrived, and it promises the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron and his path to forging the Rings of Power in his obsession to dominate all of Middle Earth.

In anticipation of the new season, we sat down with the cast including, harlie Vickers (Sauron/Annatar), Markella Kavenagh (Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot) and Tyroe Muhafidin (Theo) to discuss the events of the upcoming series, and just what audiences can expect from this radically new series.

Watch our full interview with the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power below:

It was fantastic to meet Charlie, Markella and Tyroe, who were incredibly open and warm in their response and discussed how the theme of creativity is shaping much of the action behind Season Two, just how far Sauron’s seduction stretches in his pursuit of ultimate power and how the land of Rhûn features heavily into our deeper exploration of the narrative this season.

We also learnt about Charlie’s dramatic hair changes and just whether the elf Annatar would headline an 80s hair metal band, just what tracks got Markella’s Nori into her groove, and how high Tyroe’s Theo will be flying this season with his stunt work.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron (Charlie Vickers) has returned. Cast out by Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), without an army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season One’s epic scope and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. As friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good — Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots — will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all: each other.

It was fantastic to speak with Charlie, Markella and Tyroe, and audiences will be well-pumped for the adventure, magic and dawning of the Dark Lord Sauron as he makes his claim for control of Middle Earth in Season Two.

For many fans, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings occupies a very special place in their hearts. In what will be a special release, Sir Peter Jackson, working in unison with renowned anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, is working to bring a new artistic interpretation to Tolkien’s Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. And this first trailer is utterly glorious.

Watch the brand new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim below:

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

This new trailer does a terrific job of bringing together the worlds of Sir Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy with a fresh chapter of Tolkien’s Middle Earth lore, and it fully showcases an incredible level of storytelling and art on behalf of Kenji Kamiyama’s total vision for this project.

We were thoroughly spellbound by the first-look art pieces that arrived online back in June, and seeing this trailer come to life is a breathtaking experience. Not only is the anime dynamic and kinetic in its delivery, but it is directly shaped by character and story, and it’s fantastic to see a new interpretation of Tolkien as seen through the anime lens.

The trailer is also an exciting watch as it gives audiences a fresh look into The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s central protagonist, Hèra, portrayed by Gaia Wise. In describing her character in more detail, Wise said there was a close association between Hèra and the classic anime character Nausicaä from Hayao Miyazaki’s classic manga and anime Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and that she also drew inspiration from the portrayals of Eowyn and Arwen as portrayed by Miranda Otto and Liv Tyler. She describes Hèra as a tomboy-ish character and says that she brings a rebellious and complicated spirit to the narrative, which will keep audiences on guard the whole way through.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a grand event that will be a must watch experience for long time fans of Tolkien’s work, and with its fresh approach to this grand story, I have a feeling we’re in for a thoroughly remarkable piece of storytelling when it arrives in cinemas on December 11.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron (Vickers) has returned. Cast out by Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), without an army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.
At nearly four minutes long, this latest trailer for the Second Season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gives audiences a look into its vast scope and committed action as the Dark Lord Sauron (Charlie Vickers) makes his intentions known and begins to craft his tools of deceit in his quest for total power: The Rings of Power! It’s an epic rush that sees our lead characters scattered to the vast corners of Middle Earth as they seek a way to unify and challenge the growing power of Sauron. And audiences will be thrown into a whirlwind adventure in this new season.

This new trailer was presented at a special panel as a part of this year’s San Diego Comic Con, where they presented the first look trailer for 6,500 fans who were packed into Hall H for the announcement.

Fans were also excited to see a glimpse of many of the fantastical, and sometimes frightening, creatures that will appear this season, including a young Shelob, an army of Barrow-wights, Hill-troll Damrod, a Sea Worm, and even Ents! The riveted crowd also enjoyed teases of several major battle scenes that will be pivotal to Season Two’s storylines.

This all-new trailer dials up the excitement, danger, action, and passion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s grand world, and Season Two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power promises a full-on rush when it arrives on Prime Video on August 29.

Fans have been left salivating thanks to the release of some first look imagery from the upcoming fantasy anime epic, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and this is going to be a release that is going to take audiences by surprise.

Thanks to a recent press event at the Annecy Animation Festival, these new images have been released. They convey the heroine of the film’s story, Hèra (Gaia Wise), along with other central characters who have a position within the history and lineage of the land of Rohan, including Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), Haleth (Benjamin Wainwright), and Hama (Yazdan Qafouri).

In addition to the new casting news, which includes the huge boon of seeing celebrated actor Brian Cox (Succession, Troy, Manhunter) as King Helm Hammerhand, the legendary ruler of the Horse Lords of Rohan who would give his name to the fortress of Helm’s Deep, Lord of the Rings star Miranda Otto, who portrayed the Rohirrin noblewoman and shieldmaiden Éowyn, will narrate the story.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set 183 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan, and his family as they defend their kingdom against an army of Dunlendings.

One of the most interesting things about this new look imagery is how it has firmly set the style and direction of the film in the anime direction. And we’re loving what we’re getting here. Celebrated anime director Kenji Kamiyama is the man at the helm of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and he’s bringing his definite anime style and mixing it together with the work of Weta Workshop to create something that is radically different, but that absolutely hits audiences the right way. The new footage that was displayed impressed many people, including Andy Serkis, who stated, “The fans are going to go nuts for this.”

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is shaping up to be an utterly epic animated feature that will excite audiences when it arrives in cinemas on December 13, 2024.

Prime Video’s colossal fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, was a massive event for the streaming giant, and with its shocking ending and announcement of the arrival of the Dark Lord Sauron (Charlie Vickers), as the series’ big bad, audiences were left on a hell of a cliffhanger. Now, Season Two of this colossal epic awaits, and audiences will be primed for the coming darkness with a newly released teaser trailer.

Check out the new teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power below:

The debut teaser trailer takes viewers on an action-packed journey back to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, and shows the ascending evil presence of Sauron as he continues his vengeful quest for complete power. Showcasing the cinematic splendour that the series is known for and heralding the return of many fan-favorite characters, including Galadriel, Elrond, Prince Durin IV, Arondir, and Celebrimbor, this first look also reveals the much-anticipated creation of more Rings.

In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season One’s epic scope and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.

Standing front and centre amidst all the fanfare surrounding the new series is Charlie Vickers in the role of Sauron, one of the world’s greatest literary villains, appearing in a new form – one that will aid him in deceiving the denizens of Middle-earth. The new teaser places Vickers Sauron at the very heart of the action, and this new series will very much delve into how Sauron came to deceive those around him in his quest for ultimate power.

The drums of war are beating and both the light and the dark are assembling their forces as new magic swirls around in the lastest episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Nori questions her instincts; Elrond struggles to stay true to his oath; Halbrand weighs his destiny; The Southlanders brace for attack.

A war is brewing between the light and the dark, and each member of Middle Earth is readying to choose their sides. But not all the sides are devoted to battle and there is much back and forth in Episode Five of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, ‘Partings’. In this episode the audience is able to spend time with both the Númenorions and the sides of darkness under Adar and his orcish horde. And the coming fight will not be a simple one. Much conflict is brewing in the battle to come and again we see the to and fro of Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), who is the clament to the throne of The Southlands, and who has so far has turned away from his future and destiny. But destiny can only be ignored for so long, and here in ‘Partings’ Halbrand has a decisive choice to make.

‘Partings’ also sees us return to the migration of the Harfoots and we learn more of the budding friendship of the inquisitive Nori Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh) and the mysterious Stranger (Daniel Weyman). Questions of purpose and character are raised and a shocking turn of events threatens the very foundation of their friendship. Fans who have been longing for a larger display of magic will be intrigued by The Stranger’s actions. And things get explosive. Creators J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay are keeping their cards close to the chest in relation to the actions and character of The Stranger, but his presence has been noted and a dark shadow is interested in his power.

Episode Five also places a lot of its attention upon the partnership of Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Durin IV (Owain Arthur), who have decided to work together and travel back to the Kingdom of Lindon, where secrets and manipulations await them. This focus on Lindon and the presence of the new ore Mithril will keep fans very intrigued thanks to its focus on Tolkien’s lore and the presentation of some very big ideas. One sequence, in particular, is sure to have fans salivating and it’s an epic moment for the series to present to fans, and hopefully will set up what could be one of the most exciting moments of the series going forward.

Again the scale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is taken to another level in Episode Five, ‘Partings’ and the full might of Númenor is on full display as their army readies for war. Clad in shining armour and reading for a fight, this is the Second Age of Middle Earth in all its glory and it’s an utterly impressive sight to witness at the culminating moments of the episode. But with the pageantry and pomp of the ceremony, there is also the threat of war, and a battle dawns on the horizons for Númenor and the lands of Middle Earth.

‘Partings’ has some incredible visuals in its presentation and the sides of light and dark are readying for a fight. The battle is to come and it will get furious.
