As their marriage quietly unravels, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and an impending divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family—forcing them to navigate co-parenting, identity, and whether love can take a new form.

A Modern Comedy of Remarriage

Labelled a “comedy of remarriage”, a once-dominant Hollywood subgenre of the 1930s and ’40s, Is This Thing On? takes that familiar framework and flips it entirely on its head. Rather than romantic escapism, Cooper, co-writing alongside Arnett and Mark Chappell, offers a deeply personal, modern examination of marriage, separation, and the emotional whiplash that lives in between.

What makes the film truly distinctive is its framing through the world of live stand-up comedy. It’s here that relationships unravel, truths spill out, and pain is transformed, sometimes clumsily, sometimes cruelly, into laughs. The result is a film that feels current, uncomfortable, funny, and sharply honest.

Will Arnett Steps Into the Spotlight

Will Arnett delivers one of the strongest performances of his career as Alex Novak, a disillusioned financier facing the amicable end of his marriage to Tess (Laura Dern). Lost, depressed, and drifting, Alex stumbles into a comedy club one night, accidentally takes the stage, and discovers an unexpected talent for stand-up.

As Alex’s comedy career begins to take off, success brings complications, not just professionally, but emotionally and domestically. Arnett plays Alex as a deeply flawed everyman, searching for meaning in all the wrong places, and his performance anchors the film’s emotional weight while guiding audiences through its surprising narrative turns.

A Character-Driven Swing That Keeps You Guessing

Cooper also steps in front of the camera, delivering a wildly unhinged supporting turn as Alex’s best friend, Balls — a performance that injects chaos and energy into an already volatile emotional landscape. With a script that leans heavily on dialogue and performance, the cast is given room to explore the messiness, contradictions, and unresolved tensions that define real marriages.

One of the film’s boldest strengths is its refusal to play things safe. Is This Thing On? happily zigzags narratively, particularly in a third act that takes an unexpected, and genuinely daring, turn. It’s here that Cooper shows real confidence as a filmmaker, trusting the audience to stay with the story rather than spoon-feeding resolution.

Chemistry That Carries the Film

At the heart of it all is the chemistry between Arnett and Laura Dern. Together, they’re electric — believable both in moments of warmth and shared history, and in the sharper, more antagonistic beats that follow. Their dynamic gives the film its emotional backbone, and when the story shifts gears late in the game, their performances ensure the impact truly lands.

Final Verdict

Is This Thing On? is smart, clever, and wildly surprising; a comedy that understands that laughter and heartbreak often share the same breath. Bradley Cooper is firmly on his A-game here, delivering a character-driven film that fires on all cylinders and refuses to conform to expectations. For audiences looking for something sharp, different, and emotionally alive — where character, narrative, and comedy take centre stage, Is This Thing On? delivers pure, unexpected cinematic joy.

Here’s the official synopsis:

As their marriage quietly unravels, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and an impending divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family—forcing them to navigate co-parenting, identity, and whether love can take a new form.

Celebrated Hollywood star steps behind the camera once more for Is This Thing On?, and in uniting with comic star Will Arnett he delivers something radically different in a movie that almost feels like a throwback to the cinema of the mid 1990s or early 2000s, and there’s a lot going on in Is This Thing On? and this is shaping up to be a very clever watch for audiences.

Looking deeper into the subject matter of this film, and its exploration of marriage, divorce, parenthood, family and love, it feels like Cooper has dug from a very personal place to bring this story to life, and that there’s almost an element of catharthis present in this story that he’s looking to explore to a more fuller range with what he presnets here in Is This Thing On?.

As a space for Arnett to explore his dramatic chops, Is This Thing On? is perfect space for the actor to play in and by my reckoning I think audiences are going to be in for a real surprise with this one, and with it’s narrative layering, subtle comedic and dramatic depth, Is This Thing On? is going to be something unepcted for audiences.

Delivering laughs and heart, Is This Thing On? will arrive in cinemas soon.
